Proudly Associated With Fullers
With the heavy over night rain and a pessimistic mid morning phone call the North Holmwood boys were not too sure whether the weather would allow us to play.
Luckily the rain stayed off and with a drying near gale force wind all afternoon the track dried rapidly during the game.
Newdigate won the toss and inserted Holmwood on the drying surface.
.
Anyway, Darren 'not so new boy' Jordan and Rob 'wet weather' Tyers strode to the wicket confident of runs against the very youthful opposition.
Runs came at a fair rate of knots as the pair neared the hundred partnership in just 25 overs. Unfortunately 'wet weather' played a little early on one and dollied up a chance for a fine 36. The Chairman strode out brimming with confidence after the last weekend's glut of runs and started
positively punishing any loose balls to the boundary. With the likelihood of an early declaration Jordan upped the run rate until he walked down the wicket and straight past the ball only to be bowled for a fine 61. Skipper Goff came & went. Short of Andy Guest, the middle order batting line
up had to have a little change. Rob Lines joined the run feast and as soon as he started moving his feet played some delightful shots all round the park.
Meanwhile Elliott was butchering the bowling to all parts hitting 8 sixes on his way to his 101 not out. The declaration was made on 254 off 40 overs.
Tea, very nice it was too.
The Newdigate reply started with the loss of the opener for very few and the Holmwood boys could smell blood. Unfortunately for the fielding team the batsmen dug in and defended stoically for long periods. Skipper Goff rung the changes and tried 7 bowlers in all of which 6 got
a wicket each. With slips and very close in fielders any ball that missed a fielder seem to go for a boundary. Resistance came from 3 batsmen, young Bowley who opened made a superb 43 whilst Szarkynski with an unbeaten 49 and Harris 53 playing some good shots. Eventually stumps
were drawn with Newdigate 189-6 off 50 overs.
And so to the evening and a visit to old boy Matt Jordan in the Royal Oak, Brockham. On to the club for a couple before the younger members decided to throw some shapes in Crawley whilst the more mature members hit the Chilli & Spice in Dorking for a curry. Good end to a good day.
Finally, best wishes to Cheesy on a full and speedy recovery after the op on his shoulder last Friday (15th May).
NORTH HOLMWOOD 254 for 3 drew with NEWDIGATE 189 for 6
