They say "it's a funny old game" sometimes but no more was it more apt than at Inholms Lane on Saturday. The side unbeaten since August 2007 playing the side without a win for quite sometime, there can only be one result.
Newdigate won the toss and asked their hosts to bat first. The recent storms has spiced the wicket up a little giving the bowlers a little encouragement. Peter Pople and Craig Jones bowled beautifully early on restricting Holmwood's experienced openers of Darren Jordan and Rob Tyers to lofted drives or having to be patient and wait for bad balls, of which there were few. The young Newdigate fileders also served their team well with keeness all around. Jordan fell 1st to Pople caught at slip of one that did a little of the seam for 26. Ian Elliott joined Tyers and found the going tough as the ball sometimes 'stuck' in the wicket and other times it didn't. Frustration grew as shots were miss timed and after 30 overs the score was 85-1, something had to be done. The long handle was employed by Elliott who swatted, smashed, pulled and heaved anything off line or short. The return of Jones for the final few overs accounted for Tyers for a patient 36. Andy Guest's short stay yielded 14 valuable runs as he and Elliott pushed the total up to 181-2 off 41 overs the Chairman unbeaten on 81 at the declaration.
Tea, very nice thanks.
Hopes were high for Holmwood and the skipper started the innings with himself and Jordan's legbreaks. The rain came, heavy for a while enough for the players to leave the pitch to seek cover. On resumption Stewart Homewood replaced Jordan and started well teasing the batsmen, the drizzle continued and the ball became a bar of soap. Elliott replaced Homewood, Steve Edwards replaced Goff. Edwards it was who finally got a wicket, Hiten Patel for 38 clean bowled. Still the drizzle came down and the wind got up (have I made enough excuses yet?) all the while Bill Turner was keeping the scoreboard ticking with some good shots and some out of the uncultured book previously used by Elliott in the previous innings. Oh and a few catches went down, about 4 in all. Goff returned to bowl Capel for 19 to be replaced by Mark Rance who chanced his arm to make an unbeaten 37 supporting his captain who finished the game 83 not out. Well done Newdigate.
NORTH HOLMWOOD 181 for 2 lost to NEWDIGATE 182 for 2
